Small Mammals Workshop 2 of 3 (Smithills Estate 18:30 - 20:00)Small Mammals Workshop 2 of 3 (Smithills Estate 18:30 - 20:00)
 Friday 08 April, 2016
Join us to find out which small mammals live in the woods at High Shores Clough SBI and the surrounding grasslands. There is a good chance of getting close up views of wood mice, and if we are lucky, shrews and voles as well. These are all mammals which are rarely seen. We will be putting down the traps on Thursday evening (these are non-lethal and provide a safe and comfortable home, stocked with bedding and food, for the animals to stay in overnight) and returning Friday evening (attendance is optional) to set them. On Saturday morning we will make an early start to check the traps and release back into the wild any mammals caught.

High Shores Clough SBI is a grade A Site of Biological Importance and much of the woodland appears on the Ancient Woodland Inventory (Natural England 2007). Spring will see the woodland at its best with a fantastic variety of species including bluebell, wood sorrel, lesser celandine, ramsons and common bistort which occur widely; wood anemone is more localised. This workshop on woodland flower identification will be led by David Dutton, Ecologist at the Greater Manchester Ecology Unit. The site is an ideal location to learn how to identify our most common woodland flowers.
